Exhibited:
Shimamura Shunmei (1853-1896), the son of the artist Shimamura Toshikane/Shunjun associated with the Imperial Court, was a skilled wood carver at the young age of sixteen. Later, due to foreign demand, he started to focus on executing complex carvings in ivory. His award-winning works were at the Naikoku Kangyo hakurankai (Domestic Industrial Expositions) between 1881 and 1895 and overseas at the Chicago Columbus Exposition of 1893. One of the founding members of the Tokyo Sculptors' Society, together with Asahi Gyokuzan, Ishikawa Komei and Kaneda Kenjiro, his ivory sculpture can be found in the collection of the Tokyo National Museum
